Eligibility Requirements/Process:
Membership Requirements once inducted (for 2023/24):
- Students who have at least a 3.5 weighted GPA are initially eligible based on their transcript (solely academic) as it stands at the end of first semester their junior year.
- In mid-late February, all academically eligible juniors will receive an emailed letter (to their nhcs email account) inviting them to apply to Laney's NHS if interested. If a junior thinks that he or she meets the GPA requirement but does not receive an invitation to apply by the end of February, he or she should contact his or her counselor immediately as the application process is very timely.
- The invitation letters will give directions about how to complete and submit the application. The application gives students the opportunity to showcase their other eligibility requirements which include service, leadership, and character as well as extra-curricular school involvement. Students will have at least 2 weeks to complete and submit their application and should contact the NHS advisers if they have any questions.
- There is no fee to apply to NHS so if you receive an email asking you to pay to apply, this is not from Laney!
- Applications must be submitted by the due date as late submissions will not be considered.
- In September of their senior year, academically eligible students who fit under the following categories are given another opportunity to apply: 1) they did not apply as juniors 2) they were not accepted as juniors 3) they were not eligible as juniors but now have a 3.5 weighted GPA. The application process is the same but moves a bit faster.
Membership Requirements once inducted (for 2023/24):
- Maintain at least the minimum required 3.50 GPA throughout their senior year.
- Continue to reflect the high standards of scholarship, leadership, service and character that were used as a basis for selection. Failure to do this will result in probationary status, additional required hours, and/or dismissal.
- Attend Meetings - Meetings will be held the first Thursday of each month (that we are in school) during Flex. Members will be notified through school email and Remind if the date and time changes due to school conflicts.. Members will receive a half point for each meeting they attend. Members may NOT miss more than three meetings. If this does occur, members must make up the points by participating in extra service projects (these will be specifically assigned).
- Earn 20 point of service by May 2nd - Members must earn points from a combination of individual service projects, group directed projects (at least one), meeting attendance (at least 7 out of 10), and from tutoring other students who are not family members (for at least 5 hours). All service projects must be approved (or be on the pre-approved list) before a member proceeds with its implementation. Thus, the Service Project Form must be filled out and submitted to Ms. Perez or Ms. Woodbury for approval prior to the event. Updates for opportunities will be shared at meetings and through weekly Remind notices sent out by our student president. All Service Projects must validated on an NHS Service form and must be pre-approved and signed by Ms. Woodbury or Maylani before you volunteer.
- Pay National Honor Society dues - Dues of $15 are required. This must be paid online through Laney's new parent pay system by December 15th..
- By December 15th, members must earn at least 5 points to remain eligible - A member who fails to fulfill these requirements will be placed on probation and subsequently dismissed if points are not fulfilled by the January meeting date.
- Participate in the Spring Induction Ceremony - April 29, 2024 at 5:30 at Northside Baptist Church.
- Wearing a Collar for Graduation - In order to earn a collar, students must be in good standing with the chapter and fulfill all minimum meeting, individual service and tutoring requirements, along with other hours of their choice, which must total at least 20 points by our May meeting.
